While we are getting ready for the arrival of Peaky Blinders Series 5 - which hits our screens on August 25th - now is as good a time as ever to look back at what has been going on in the lives of the nation’s favorite Birmingham crime family. With the rest of the series on Netflix we suggest that you catch up there before the new series kicks off.
Peaky Blinders first appeared on our screens in 2013 and managed to gather a massive following over the years. It established itself, despite being surrounded by the likes of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and other huge television series. As a series, it grew to become one of the most iconic television series around.
As you well know, the show is set around the Shelby family. But this isn’t just any family; they go on to become one of the biggest crime families in the UK. With connections in all walks of life and organizations, we follow the Shelby brothers as they struggle against deadly rival gangs and crime bosses.
The show also guides us through some of the most significant periods of British history. For instance, series 1 picks up from when the Brothers all return from the First World in 1919. It then takes on a journey into the 1920’s. The new series begins at the start of the 1930’s – just at the beginning of the Great Depression.
In series 4 we saw The Shelby’s seeing off the dangerous Luca Changretta. There was also much concern for Tommy Shelby’s mental health. But this did not stop him from pursuing his political ambitions. Tommy becomes MP of Birmingham South in a landslide victory over his political rivals.
When the new series starts, we can expect more trouble and strife in store for the Shelbys. This time the enemy comes in the shape of Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s. There is also trouble in the north, as a gang from Glasgow known as The Billy Boys, who begin to expand into the Shelby’s territory.
By all accounts series 5 is going to be a cliffhanger. Is this going to be Tommy Shelby’s biggest test? Will he and his family empire emerge from these new threats that just don’t have consequences for the Shelby empire – but for the nation as a whole?
