Back in the late 1900’s, there was a game called Donkey Kong which turned out to be a craze! The aim of this game was to help “jump man” save his girlfriend “Pauline” from the evil gorilla who was also in love with her. The “jump man” character wore red overalls, a cap and was a carpenter. The character was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto who was hired by Nintendo in 1977. Does that ring a bell? Yes, you guessed it. This is how Mario made his first appearance.
Nintendo then decided to pull Mario out of the game as a solo character and feature him in a game of his own. This was like a blessing for many of us! The gaming company was not keen on releasing a game called “Jumpman.” This is when they realised the striking resemblance between their landlord, Mario Segale and “Jumpman.” Then, Jumpman’s character was renamed Mario.
Mario Segale was an Italian man and that is why today the protagonist of this successful game has an Italian accent too. Me gusto! Why is the does popular man in gaming wear overalls and not a suit and shiny shoes? Because of the graphical limitations at the time of developing the game, the pixels were difficult to arrange. Making hair with the graphical capabilities would look horrible. So, covering it up with a cap was a great idea. The concept of the overalls was to ease the character of Mario. That is how Mario was created.
Since Donkey Kong was released in 1981, Super Mario has evolved to over 150 different Mario games, which is too much to keep up with! The latest game of 2017 being Super Mario Odyssey is still under the responsibility of Nintendo! Most popular games are: Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land and Super Mario Bro’s 3.
Mario has become popular over time because he’s been around for much of people’s childhood. Since the evolution, it’s like he’s grown up with some of us. Mario is endearing for his looks; a chubby plumber who’s always mind set in saving a princess from the bad guy. The games are family friendly and very simple to learn and play. The fact that Mario hasn’t been given a personality by his makers gives you a chance to use your imagination. Ladies, imagine how you would like Mario to sweep you off your feet and lads he would make a good gym buddy! Everyone has their own Mario persona.
