What is Day of The Dead? -

What is the Day of The Dead......👻

What first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about the ‘Day of the Dead’? If you are thinking about one of those never-ending scary television shows, you will be surprised! The Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de Muertos in Spanish, is a beautiful celebration to pay tribute to deceased friends and family members during which they help support the spiritual journey of those who are no more.

The Day of the Dead consists of two different holidays. There’s the Day of the Innocents or the Day of the Little Angels which takes place on November 1. And as its name suggests, it is dedicated to all the children and infants. The actual Day of the Dead happens on November 2. The festivities frequently start on October 31.

Day of The Dead and Halloween …...The Day of the Dead and Halloween might sound the same, but they are two distinct holiday celebrations but, yet they coincide. Halloween which is known as All Saints’ Day or All Souls’ Day has some connections with the Day of The Dead festival. They are celebrated on 31 October, 1 November and 2 November respectively. Some of the likenesses are that both honours the deceased, involve costumes, skeletons, graveyards, treats and death imagery. While Halloween is more of a dark night of terror 🌚, Day of the Dead festivities involves an explosion of joy, humour and colour. Yes, both runs on the death theme, but Día de Muertos aim is to show love and respect for the lifeless family members.

A Leap Into History…. The Day of the Dead takes its origin in Mexico and is now considered as a national symbol. This custom goes back a long, long time ago. Thousands of years ago with Toltec, Aztec and some other Nahua people, who thought that grieving the dead was disrespectful.  All these pre-Hispanic cultures considered death as a natural phase. The dead were still members of their family and communities and they kept these deceased people’s alive in spirit and memory. And in their cultures, they would come back to Earth on Día de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead.

During this festival, people go to cemeteries where they feel connected with the souls of their departed ones. They build private altars which are called ofrendas. It is a collection of objects that are being placed on a ritual altar to welcome the dead. It contains beverages, food, memorabilia as well as photos.

The Top Things About The Day Of The Dead…... The Mexican Day of the Dead includes festivals and grandiose parades where people sport various colourful skulls and face paints that hold deep meanings. White represents purity and spirit. Yellow represents unity and the sun. Red represents the blood of life. Purple represents the mourning felt by all the people who have lost their loved ones. And pink means happiness.

There’s more…. The sugar skulls represent the cyclicality of life. Monarch butterflies are thought by many to represent the soul of those that are no more. Finally, the scent of Marigold is thought to help all the spirits of the deceased back from the graveyard to their dwelling family homes.
