No other sportsman has captured people’s imagination more than the legendary boxer, Manny Pacquiao. From the 2000s up to today, he fought and won against 20 World Champions across 8 different weight classes. Some of the biggest names of the boxing world have come against Manny Pacquiao and fell short – that is just how good he is!
Over his career, Pacquiao won 12 major world titles along the way. But he didn’t win them by sticking to one weight division. Such was his talent, that he was able to move through 8 weight divisions winning world titles in four of them. He has done battle in the Flyweight, Featherweight, lightweight and Welterweight divisions.
There were two fights for Manny Pacquiao in 2019. In January, he faced Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Broner was blown away by The Pacman and wasn’t able to outsmart the streetwise style of Manny Pacquiao during the course of this main event. In the end, Pacquiao managed to defend his WBA (Regular) Welterweight title.
In July 2019, Manny Pacquiao beat Keith Thurman in Las Vegas. The fight was too close to call, but Pacquiao won due to a split decision. Thurman had been undefeated up to that point in his career when Manny Pacquiao found a way to keep his opponent at arm’s length. Because the fight finished so close, Keith Thurman has demanded a rematch and is prepared to take on Pacquiao once more.
But he will have to get in line as Floyd Mayweather could be up next to face him once more. If rumours are to be believed, Manny Pacquiao will face his biggest rival. The last time the pair met was in 2015, it ended in defeat for Pacquiao. So, as you can imagine, the hype around a rematch would be massive! Manny Pacquiao has told the media that he is happy to face Mayweather again. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out. There’s no doubt that if it goes ahead, it will be one of the biggest fights around!
Away from the boxing ring, Pacquiao made a name for himself in politics. This all started at the beginning of 2007 when he runs for a seat in the Philippine House of Representatives in the Legislative Election. He missed out in that Election but ran again in 2010. This time he was elected as a Congressman of the District of Sarangani. 2013 saw him change political party and win a second term. Then in 2016, he ran for Senator as a member of another party and got 16 million votes.
Along with Boxing and politics, The Pacman has thrown himself into the worlds of acting and singing. He has released a number of albums and acted in films and hosted television shows. There seems to be no end to the man’s ambitions and talents. This is why he has become one of the outstanding sportsmen in recent years.
