They did it! England won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Their first World Cup title has made their country proud. They had a long battle to win this title, but they got over the line by collecting 15 runs against New Zealand.
The match was full of drama from start to finish. It was the fourth time that England made the final, but this time they took the World Cup home! There was lots of debate surrounding the outcome of the match. Former Umpire Simon Taufel confessed that giving England six runs by advantage of an overthrow was “a clear mistake. It’s an error of judgment,”.
On the other hand, Ashley Giles who is England’s Director of Cricket said: "Not really. You could argue the last ball that [Trent] Boult bowled was a full toss on leg stump and if Stokes' hadn't just been looking for two he probably would've banged it out of the ground anyway. We are world champions; we have got the trophy and we intend to keep it."
The England Captain, Eoin Morgan was drenched with champagne after the big victory. The man of the match Ben Stokes managed an 84 set up the tie before helping - he scored 15 runs. Eoin Morgan, the English Captain said: “To come through it is extraordinary. He’s almost superhuman. He has really carried the team and our batting line-up. The atmosphere, the emotion that was running through the whole game, he managed to deal with that in an extremely experienced manner. And obviously, everybody watching at home will hopefully try and be the next Ben Stokes”.
He also mentioned: “It’s been an absolutely incredible journey to everybody around the country and around the world who has followed us and supported us, thank you so much. It’s been phenomenal. Right from the very beginning of the tournament, all the way through, regardless of our performance, people believed because we believed and I’m very thankful for that and everybody is as well.”
New Zealand on the other hand, played well. This talented team managed to reach the finals once more. Plus, it was hard to assume who was going to win this year’s World Cup. England strived until the last minute. The captain of New Zealand said: “It was a shame that the ball hit Stokes’ bat, but I just hope it doesn’t happen in moments like that. Unfortunately, that sort of thing happens from time to time. It’s a part of the game that we play. I don’t wish to nitpick, just hope it never happens in such moments ever again,”
England celebrated their success and brought the fruit of their hard work home. Let’s keep an eye for the next ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023. There might be a comeback from New Zealand or probably the five-time champions Australia.Lisa Stolmings / 19 July 2019
